do even small expenses put on a credit card help build your credit?

My economics teacher was telling us that when you first get your credit card it is a good idea to try and buy things that you already have in pocket. (ie buying a few shirts at the mall). My question is can small expenses (such as clothing) really build your credit?

the suggestion seems to be along the line of using your card as how you would with money to make normal purchaces. this helps to keep youn aware of the purchases you make so that there are no surprises at the end of the month
