Oilers snap 11-game road skid with shootout win over Kings
By Sports Network February 12, 2010
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) – Lubomir Visnovsky scored the decisive goal in the 10th round of the shootout, as the Edmonton Oilers snapped a lengthy road losing streak with a 3-2 win over Los Angeles at Staples Center.
After Alexander Frolov’s bid missed the net, Visnovsky skated down the middle, dipped the shoulder and beat seldom-used Los Angeles backup goalie Erik Ersberg on the forehand.
Denis Grebeshkov and Dustin Penner lit the lamp for the Oilers, who blew a two-goal lead in the third period but recovered to post their first win in five games and first away from Rexall Place since December 11 at St. Louis. Edmonton had dropped 11 straight as the guest.
Oilers netminder Jeff Deslauriers was strong between the pipes with 41 saves.
“Wins have been hard to come by this year so it was nice to happen,” said Edmonton head coach Pat Quinn. “Our guys battled hard, killed a penalty in overtime and they deserved a couple of points. (Deslauriers) was real good and good in the shootout as well.”
Dustin Brown and Ryan Smyth provided the offense for the Kings, who have lost two in a row on the heels of a franchise-record nine-game winning streak.
Ersberg, making his first start since January 11 in place of workhorse Jonathan Quick, who was battling the flu, finished with 21 saves in just his eighth game of the season.
A power-play tally by Penner made it 2-0 at 7:47 of the third, but Brown backhanded the rebound of a Rob Scuderi shot with 8:55 remaining and Smyth pounced on a loose puck down low with 4:48 showing on the clock.
“Both of the goals we scored we were getting traffic in front of the net, and we were banging away,” said Los Angeles forward Anze Kopitar.
Grebeshkov opened the scoring with a shot from just inside the blueline at the 13:38 mark of the middle stanza.
