have you ever written a story that was set somewhere you had never been?

say for instance you write a story set in China when your from Chicago and have never even been to china. or from Scotland and set it in Brazil but again you have never even been there.
where did you set yours and did it work out well?

Yes. The novel I’m currently working on takes place in Maine, and I’ve never been there. Also, there are flashbacks that take place in England, and I’ve never been there either.

I have some descriptions of scenery and things like that, and I’ve relied on films and photographs I’ve seen of the locations. I think it’s worked out well. I described a rocky beach and woods (Maine), as well as a mansion on a cloudy and rainy day (England).

I think whether or not you’re writing about a specific city and/or how detailed you want to be with your descriptions will determine how much research you have to do in order to do this accurately. My story is set in a fictional town mainly, and the England scenes are set in a counry house so I have some freedom.
