Is it appropriate to use a handkerchief in the pocket at the waist?

I have a beautiful black jacket with pockets at the waist high, before the chest. I am very similar to the appearance of a handkerchief in his pocket, but I've only seen this done with breast pockets. Is it appropriate to put on a scarf at the waist or just be fun?
